Canadian DJ/Producer Ekali, aka Nathan Shaw, experienced a rapid rise to recognition after receiving a writing credit on Drake's If You're Reading This It's Too Late. Shaw made his first foray into music at a young age, beginning to learn the violin at 12 years old. The instrument's appeal didn't last long, but while growing up he did persevere with guitar and various other instruments, and played in a number of bands throughout high school, eventually securing some session bass work in Vancouver. When he was 19 he began touring with the Vancouver-based band Said the Whale as their bassist. Shaw also began to explore making his own music, but didn't feel confident as a vocalist or content writing music on just one instrument, so he started creating music via samples and software.
iskwē is, among many other things, an artist – a creator and communicator of music and of movement, of pictures, poetry and prose. And through it all, she’s a teller of stories that have impacted our past and will inform our future. acākosīk | ᐊᒐᑯᓯᐠ is the culmination of her creation and collaboration to this point. It’s a collection of seven sonic explorations that not only blur lines between sources and styles, but also between the actual and the ideal, the real and imagined. acākosīk incorporates more intense and urgent tinges of alternative, post-rock, and even industrial. The cohesive-yet-combustible result tips a cap to modern innovators like Florence + The Machine and FKA twigs while simultaneously borrowing sounds accumulated over centuries by iskwē’s cree and Métis ancestors.
acākosīk has received critical praise since the release on November 8, 2019. The video for “Little Star” garnered a JUNO Award (Canada’s Grammy/Brit Awards) for Best Music Video in 2020, the album was nominated for Adult Alternative Album of the Year, and “Breaking Down” was nominated for a Prism Prize and SOCAN Songwriting Prize.
The Fight Within released in 2017 received a Juno-nomination and was Long-Listed for the Polaris Music Prize.

The blueprint for Neon Dreams’ music is simple. “A well-told story, a beautiful melody and some emotional chords are what we aim for. The genre doesn’t matter to us as long as it makes people feel something,” explains frontman Frank Kadillac. Since 2014, the Halifax duo (Kadillac, Adrian Morris) have followed those simple steps with cumulative success, including a win for Best New Group or Solo Artist at the 2017 Canadian Radio Music Awards, a performance at the Juno Awards, their own Warner Music-backed record label Dreaming Out Loud, and even a spot on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s summer Spotify playlist. Known for their high-energy live performances and irresistible, radio- friendly bops, Neon Dreams first turned heads in 2016 with their gold- certified single, “Marching Bands.” Two EPs – 2016’s To You and last year’s Wolf, Princess & Me – followed, setting up the band’s anticipated debut full-length slated for early 2019. Much like with each release to date, their new music takes the listener through the Neon Dreams experience, an exhilarating trip that defies genre pigeonholing, as they draw freely upon pop, rock, EDM, hiphop and reggae elements, integrating and blending them in a seamless and thrilling fashion. Kadillac credits a soul-cleansing trip he took to Nicaragua earlier this year as a major leap forward for him as a songwriter. “Nicaragua was a therapeutic, spiritual journey for me,” he says. “I didn’t know what was my next step in life was, and then this camp came out of nowhere like I was invited to Hogwarts.” From that experience came a flood of creatively and inspiration, a confident step forward for a group that continually pushes the envelope with their genre-blurring music. “We’ve been experimenting with a lot of our production, writing and brand,” adds Kadillac. “Now that we have solid team supporting us you can expect this album to be an emotional rollercoaster of music. This time around we aren’t just giving people a bunch of different genres, we are giving them a mood.”

Frank Kadillac endured hardships growing up; he never stayed in one place long enough to make friends, and went to 10 different schools. This made him a easy target for bullies but he persevered, and now is dedicating his life to make sure others can overcome hardships too. “I have stories to tell from a place of love to other people who are like me,” he explains. “My main goal has been to reach as many people as I can and spread positive energy. Neon Dreams is the vessel for that message. Kadillac and drummer Adrian Morris have been making music together under that moniker since 2015, but it wasn’t until last year that Kadillac realized his true purpose. Kadillac had always felt moved to invoke positivity with his music. The band had already garnered a gold single in “Marching Bands,” accumulated tens of millions of streams, and won numerous Canadian awards the singer-songwriter wanted to reinvent their sound. In 2019, the duo released Sweet Dream till Sunbeams—an album comprising nine uplifting songs about not fitting in and overcoming adversity. Though they consider themselves to be “alt-pop,” Neon Dreams’ music can’t be pigeonholed. They mix rock with pop sensibilities, and at times Kadillac rap sings. He also gives a nod to the hip-hop community by referencing other artists’ lyrics in his own. “I like triggering people’s memory when they hear something that’s familiar to them,” he says. But really, he and Morris write music from their hearts without being concerned with genre, and incorporate everything from EDM to reggae in their sound. “This is why I’m here,” Kadillac says, recalling the first time a fan told him they found solace in his music. “I’m not going to force people to live a better life, but when they want to feel better they have a place to go.”
